What should you do when the situation is out of control?

I believe that everyone is the captain of his or her life. Unfortunately, there are times when you are not in control all of the events that are occurring anymore. The situation seems out of control. This could be so frustrating especially when you are doing your best to improve and get things done. I feel you but don’t worry there is always a way out. I wanted to give you tips to help you deal with such situations in the future.

1. Do not feed disaster scenarios

Realizing that there is an issue is one thing, but focusing on it will not help you find the solution. That’s why it’s useless to create scenarios in your head. What you can imagine is only fiction. The most important thing is to remain anchored in the present instead of feeding disaster and futuristic scenarios. You don’t know what tomorrow is made of. Nevertheless, your current situation is very real and it is your mind that perceives this situation as negative or positive.

You have the power to control your mind and redirect your thoughts. You can just watch them when they start jostling in your head. The aim is not to stop them outright, but on the contrary to become aware of their existence. It is normal to want to protect yourself from potential disappointments and misfortune. It is a natural defense mechanism. Just don’t let your negative thoughts and fears guide your actions.

2. Verbalize it

Then, to avoid overthinking and acting based on your emotions, it is necessary to verbalize the problem. Talking to someone about it will give you an outside and neutral perspective on the situation. This will probably help you dedramatize. Sometimes, all you have to do is put words on what you feel and say them out loud to relax and realize that there is nothing to panic about. You have the right not to have an answer for everything and sometimes to feel overwhelmed by some events. It happens to everyone.

However, each person will react differently depending on different factors, including the ability to take the necessary distance. You are going through an unpleasant period and you would like it to end as soon as possible, which is understandable. But, what you want right now doesn’t necessarily correspond to what you really need. You may have lessons to learn first before you can move on to the next stage of your life. This may be the reason why your current situation is dragging on or even getting worse. You must first accept these lessons in order to move forward.

3. Give yourself time

It does not mean you should remain idle and mope. I’m talking about really taking some time for yourself and taking a deep breath before throwing yourself into something even more complicated. The key is to let negative emotions and perceptions fade away. Take the time you need. You can’t speed up the process. Rather than spending your energy trying to regain control, follow the movement. Even for the most hyperactive, it is crucial to know when to take a break. You must give yourself the opportunity to recharge your batteries from time to time.

4. Take your mind off things

There are many ways to do this and it will vary from one individual to another. Depending on your personality, you can enjoy a quiet and relaxing activity such as reading or, on the opposite, need to burn some calories while exercising. In any case, you’re the person who knows yourself the best. So when you feel that the situation is out of control, don’t hesitate to clear your head and come back with the positive mindset you need to overcome the obstacles in your path. As said, the more distance you can take, the more likely you will be to make the right decisions, in a rational and non-passionate way.

5. Expand your ideas

If what you have tried so far has not solved your problem then it is time to change the method.
