Where is home?

Home. The place where we belong and feel the most comfortable. What does it mean though to “feel at home”?

There is the tangible home, with its roof and walls. It is basically where you live and decided to settle down at least for now. It is probably where you have your job, friends, perhaps family members too.

It is hence your comfort zone, where you created your habits and routine. There might be nothing much exciting about it because those are the basics for any human being. But sometimes, it is no that simple. And when you don’t “feel at home” in this particular place anymore it is the sign that it is time to move on and move out.

Then, there is the home that one can’t describe easily. The one where your heart belongs. It might be hard to describe and yet it is maybe the surest one that you could ever have. It is the foundation of who you are. This is where you have your best memories and experiences.

This place is not necessarily a physical one. Because what you need to feel home here, is one specific element or person and you are immediately at ease again. No matter where you are or where you live, as long as there is this key component of your life you know that you will be happy.

So to answer the question, I personally have 3 homes: the one I live in right now in Germany, the home of my childhood in France and, as a third non tangible one Guinea, where my heart belongs even if I wasn’t born there. It is the land of my ancestors where everything begins and somehow ends.

What about you, where is home to you?

  1. This post really resonates with me. I’ve lived in many different places and made friends and wonderful memories (some of them with my feathery travel companion) all over. Because of that I have many homes, but at the same time there is always something missing. I guess that is the reason we are always on the run, never staying in one place for more than a couple of years if we can help it.

    1. Thank you for your comment. I am glad this post resonated with you. Indeed the most important thing is to know that there will always be somewhere where we belong and it is also okay to keep looking for that special place 🙂
